"Audio CD: Weird Circle." Weird Circle OTR MP3 List.
This CD contains a recording of an old radio adaptation of Le Fanu's "Schalken the Painter." Jim Rockhill has sent the comments of R. J. Warren, who has heard the program. He writes: "the show was 'The Wooden Ghost,' and it was a 'Weird Circle' program broadcast as of December 3, 1944. The show's extant, and I may have a copy of it in my personal collection, so 'stay tuned,' as they once said. The usual caveat applies: 'The Weird Circle' is a deeply flawed show and the quality of weird tales adaptations varies considerably!'"

"Le Fanu." Sensation Writers. Sensation Writers
Good commentary about Le Fanu's sensation fiction, noting the destructive society which represses the individual, and the dreams of guilt and anxiety that torment his characters. This guilt takes on often supernatural dimensions, which reflects Le Fanu's guilt about his position in Anglo-Irish society.

McLeish, Simon. "Uncle Silas." Sheridan Le Fanu: Uncle Silas
While Le Fanu's novel has not taken its place as a classic English novel, it is the best of the sensation novels of Le Fanu's day. Le Fanu was writing a Gothic novel many years after the heyday of the Gothic novel. Notes the supernatural atmosphere even though it does not present the genuine supernatural.

Walton, James. "Article on Le Fanu's 'Schalken the Painter." Papers on Language and Literature: Vision and Vacancy: "Schalken the Painter" and Le Fanu's Art of Darkness.
An excellent study of the story that brings into play E.T.A. Hoffmann's "The Sand Man," and works by Balzac. Le Fanu creates in his story a "vision" that leads to "vacancy." Discusses a number of Le Fanu's works, especially Uncle Silas and "Green Tea." Basically, these characters see darkness. Thus, Le Fanu presents an emptiness and vacancy in man's precarious position between life and death.
